Ipoh Road Trip

A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I made a day trip down to Ipoh. And I gotta say, I will definitely go back again.

Because we woke up a little late, some of the places we planned to go were already closed or have sold out on some of their goodies.

Here are some of the places we managed to visit. 

Ps. All these places we visited were pretty close to each other - located in the same area.

Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong

I forgot to snap a picture of the shop. Silly me. It's not hard to find. An old shop at the corner. According to many reviews, this place serves very tasty coffee. So as a coffee lover, I ought to give this cuppa coffee a taste test.

It's not bad really. For those of you who prefer a more acidic kind of coffee, this is for you. The aroma is strong and the coffee is smooth. Thumbs up!

We were supposed to try their famous toast as well but unfortunately they were sold out.

Restoran Sin Lean Lee

Here to try the famous "Golden Char Kueh Tiaw".

I can't figure out why it is called the Golden Char Kueh Tiaw. Is it the egg? I can't see any resemblance. To be honest, it wasn't that great. But it wasn't bad either. They ran out of prawns so we ordered a plain plate of char kueh tiaw to try. Really not bad for a plain one. Fragrant and tasty.


Funny Mountain Soya Bean




If you search for reviews on what to eat in Ipoh, this place will no doubt be on of those places mentioned in that blogpost. And it will be on this one too.

When I first arrived, I thought, hey.. the queue is not so bad. Until I realised.... That the long stretch of cars parking by the side are all queuing as well!

Seriously. How cool is this? They serve it to you in your car! When you're done he'll come back to collect the empty bowls. Mind blown. Lol.

We got ours as takeaway and savoured it in the car.

It's so fresh and smooth. However, way too sweet for my liking. If only they didn't add in any sugar.

Got the tau fu fa as well. And man.. It is so bouncy and smooth and tasty and fresh. TWO THUMBS UP! Now every time I go to Ipoh, I will definitely have this. Definitely.

Sidetrack for a bit.. Something to be wary of while in Ipoh.

You see the man with the umbrella? Yes. He is urging cars to empty parking spaces like he is a valet or something. And if you do take "his parking", he will ask you for some money. Bare in mind that what he is doing is illegal and you DO NOT have to give him any money. Just ignore him, or them. I was told by one of the store owners that they are probably drug addicts or something. If you're afraid simply ignore the parking and find another one or go another round. I did see a few people taking the parking and just ignoring them.


Hong Kee Mah Chee and Peanut Tong Sui



Yet another place that I will definitely not miss out if I ever go to Ipoh again. It is just a tiny stall outside of a house.. It is quite likely that you will miss it, like I did. But don't give up. It will be worth it.

This bowl of peanut soup is really surprising. To me, extraordinary. When I first saw it I was like, "I'm not gonna bother trying this. I wont like it." Doesn't it look like it's going to taste yucky?

My friend ordered it anyway.

I tried it anyway. And it was SO GOOD. SO BLEEPING GOOD. I thought it would be really thick and mushy and heavy. But boy was I so wrong. It's no doubt very peanuty.. It is thick, but light at the same time. Consistency is thick. Taste is light and not sweet at all. I think there might be no sugar in it. Which I really like. Really really good.

Then the mah chee..

I am honestly not very surprised at how good it is because I have had better... In my own home. My grandma makes really awesome mah chee. So does my mom.

I would rate this a 4/5 is compared to the ones I have had at home. But it is really not easy to find soft yet tasty mah chee around. So compared to those sold outside of my home (which I have tried before), this is definitely 5/5.

And, the guy at the stall told me to put the mah chee into the peanut soup. Mmm mm mmm. VELI NAISE.


Kedai Biskut Guan Heong

My apologies. I can't find the location of this shop on google maps. You can try waze.

One of the popular shops selling chinese biscuits. Not for me to hype about as I didn't like most of the things we bought from this store. Maybe it wasn't something for my palette. Maybe others may like it. No harm to try.

That marks the end of my food trip in Ipoh! There was one chicken rice stall that I visited but I hated how everything tasted in there. So, that won't be included in this post. My tip would be go for something that looks a lot less commercialised. You most likely won't be disappointed.
